The CIPD has reported that the percentage of UK businesses struggling to attract and retain workers has almost doubled since last year.

LONDON, ENGLAND — Nearly 70 per cent of UK businesses found that embracing flexible/remote work options helped them to attract and retain staff.

This is according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the UK’s professional body for HR and people development.

The CIPD, in collaboration with independent outsourcing and recruitment provider Omni RMS, recently published its Resourcing and Talent Planning Report 2022.

That report surveyed some 1,055 UK-based HR professionals in April 2022, in the midst of crushing labour shortages in the country.

Consequently, that report highlighted just how dire the labour climate was. It found that the percentage of businesses having difficulty recruiting to fill available positions nearly doubled since last year.

However, it emphasised that flexible working options — whether fully remote or hybrid — was the solution to many of those businesses’ recruitment problem.

Now’s the time for talent acquisition

According to Remote Worker CEO Joseph Boll, the CIPD’s data show that UK companies can benefit from online talent acquisition services now more than ever.

“Ongoing labour shortages mean HR professionals, hiring managers and recruiters have to work twice as hard to compete for top talent,” said Boll, chief executive of the online jobs board that specialises in helping hiring managers and businesses connect with job-seeking professionals for remote work positions.

“The CIPD has now confirmed what has been increasingly obvious over the last few months — the UK’s labour market has a strong appetite for remote work.

“Companies that embrace this rather than fight it have an easier time recruiting, but even then, there is intense competition amongst employers who do offer some form of flexible work.

Boll noted the CIPD’s recommendation that businesses struggling with recruitment should “stipulate in job adverts that jobs can be done flexibly” as well as “take a proactive approach to widening your talent pools”.
